CHRISTMAS TREE SALE

The Beachwood Volunteer Fire Company will begin holding its annual Christmas tree sale fundraiser on Tuesday, December 1st. Come down and support the fire company by purchasing your tree.

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA

The Beachwood Volunteer Fire Company will hold its annual all-you-can-eat Breakfast with Santa Claus on Sunday, December 6th from 8am to noon at the fire hall located at 745 Beachwood Boulevard. Tickets will be sold at the door and are $6; kids under 8 eat free.

Breakfast will include scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon, coffee, tea and orange juice. The ladies auxiliary will have holiday decorations, arts and crafts and baked goods for sale.

The Beachwood Recreation Commission has a couple dozen borough heritage blankets still available for sale in time for the holiday season. TREE LIGHTING AND SING-A-LONG

The annual borough tree lighting and sing-a-long, hosted by the Recreation Commission, will take place on Sunday December 6, 2009 at 7:00PM at Beachwood Borough Hall, 1600 Pinewald Road.

Come out and enjoy the evening with your family, friends and nieghbors as we kick off the holiday season. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served following the sing-a-long. Children can visit with Santa. Pictures with Santa will be available for $2.00 each.

TOYS FOR TOTS

The Beachwood Recreation Commission and the Marine Corps League have teamed up to bring the “Toys for Tots” program to Beachwood.

New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off in the lobby of Beachwood Borough Hall, 1600 Pinewald Road in Beachwood. Toys will be collected now until December 18th. All collected toys will be distributed to needy children within our community.

BEACHWOOD RECREATION ANNUAL HOUSE DECORATING CONTEST

All entries for the annual borough house decorating contest must be received at Beachwood Borough Hall, 1600 Pinewald Road by Wednesday, December 9, 2009.

Houses will be judged between December 11-13, 2009. Remember houses must be lit to be judged. Winners will be notified on Monday December 14, 2009. Prizes will be awarded at the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 7:00PM.

BEACHWOOD RECREATION’S ANNUAL SNOWMAN CONTEST

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol

The Friends of the Beachwood Library invite you to hearken back to the Victorian era with a one-hour reading of Charles Dickens’ beloved classic, A Christmas Carol, performed by the Traveling Literary Theater. These period-dressed actors bring all characters to life!

The performance will take place at the Beachwood Community Center, 147 Compass Avenue, in the borough. This program is free to the public and appropriate for ages 10 and up. Please register.

ALL ABOUT BIRDS – WINTER COASTAL BIRDS

Now is the time to start looking for our coastal birds as winter approaches. New populations of ducks, gulls and other seabirds are beginning to arrive off our shores. Among them we can almost expect to find a rarity such as Eiders, Kittiwakes and Murres. We will discuss the best locations in New Jersey and Ocean County to find the regulars and the rarities. Jakes Branch Park Nature Center, Monday, November 30th, 7-9pm. All ages, $3 per person.

WINTER BIRD FEEDING

Adolescents ages 9-12 will have the chance to make a feeder out of recycled materials for fun backyard winter bird feeding and viewing during the next edition of Jakes Branch Park’s “Afterschool Exploration” series, being held Wednesday, December 2nd from 3:30-5pm at the Nature Center. Cost is $5 per child.

Today’s entry is a contemporary event we feel captures a part of the times we live in and should be recorded into our borough history.

The Beachwood Yacht Club has been harnessing the power of the wind for almost century on the southern shores of the Toms River. Close to a hundred years of sailors have come through their doors since it was first opened in 1915, each one knowing the sheer delight of catching the wind in their sails. Starting the 2010 season and continuing through their second century, BYC will also begin harnessing the power of the sun.

The BYC will be the first yacht club on the river to go solar. “It makes perfect sense for us, as we have been educating young people on the benefits of sailing,” said Brigitte Hoey, Commodore and past student of BYC. “Sailing builds confidence through competition, reinforces a sense of independence, and also teaches environmental responsibility all while having a lot of fun. Now we can reinforce this very important environmental message with the next generation by having kids and their families spend an  entire day of fun just using the wind and the sun.”

The Beachwood Yacht Club anticipates the construction to be in full swing just after Thanksgiving, with its completion prior to Christmas.  Updates, photos and information on its progress and solar power conversion will be found here on the Beachwood Historical Alliance’s newssite as a way to record for future generations our current era and the growing worldwide clean energy movement as it grows to reach the Borough of Beachwood.

GREETING CARDS FOR VETERANS

Children and teens are encouraged to make greeting cards, art work or letters for hospitalized veterans at medicalcCenters, nursing homes and domicilaries managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs and State Veteran Nursing Homes. The program, “America’s Children for America’s Heroes”, is sponsored by the Non-Commissioned Officers Association National Defense Fund.

Two craft stations will be set up at the library tomorrow, Friday, November 20th from 1pm to 5pm for kids and teens to make the cards (no larger than 8 1/2″ x 11″).  Cards can otherwise be dropped off at the library from now through Monday, November 23rd. All cards and letters will be mailed on the 24th.

KNIT WITS

The monthly meeting of the Knit Wits will be held tomorrow, Friday, November 20th, at 10am. Bring your needles and join the group.  All skill levels are welcome.

Top it off with a cup of hot cider and cookies while sitting by the fireplace! Don’t miss this informal and relaxing evening (please list any food allergies at time of registration). Our regular monthly meetings, typically scheduled on the last Thursday of each month at 7pm in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Cable Avenue in the borough, will for the next two months, November and December, held the last Wednesday. This is due to the holiday conflicts of Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve falling on the last Thursdays for this particular year. In the future we will be adopting this alternate schedule for whenever foreseeable holiday conflicts arise.

Anybody of any age or residence who is interested in Beachwood’s past is invited and welcome to attend, participate in our activities, bring along some old photos and sit in and listen to Beachwood stories of years gone by, perhaps contributing a few of your own.

Our full winter and spring meeting schedule can be seen below. All alternate schedule dates (the last Wednesday instead of last Thursday) are marked with an asterisk. All meetings will be held at 7pm in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Below is the first edition of that, containing  information on current and upcoming events at the library and a great opportunity to support the Recreation Commission by purchasing one of their last remaining Beachwood blankets, each of which depicts historic and contemporary architecture of the borough.

FOOD DRIVE

The Beachwood Library would like to invite you to participate in their ongoing food drive, ending this Saturday, November 14th.

Donations of all non-perishable items, preferably canned goods, will be accepted. All food will be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Beachwood as part of the Ocean County Hunger Relief Program.

GREETING CARDS FOR VETERANS

Children and teens are encouraged to make greeting cards, art work or letters for hospitalized veterans at medicalcCenters, nursing homes and domicilaries managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs and State Veteran Nursing Homes. The program, “America’s Children for America’s Heroes”, is sponsored by the Non-Commissioned Officers Association National Defense Fund.

Two craft stations will be set up at the library tomorrow, Friday, November 13th, and next Friday, November 20th from 1pm to 5pm for kids and teens to make the cards (no larger than 8 1/2″ x 11″).  Cards can otherwise be dropped off at the library from now through Monday, November 23rd. All cards and letters will be mailed on the 24th.

BUILDING BEACHWOOD

The Beachwood Historical Alliance will hold a presentation this Monday, November 16th, on the concept and construction of Beachwood at the hands of Bertram C. Mayo and Addison D. Nickerson before it became a borough in 1917. Photographs, copies of newspaper articles, and many other original historical documents of that time will be featured.

On Tuesday, November 17th at 10am the library will host a turkey craft creation station program for children ages 3 to 6 with caregiver.

The Beachwood Recreation Commission has a couple dozen borough heritage blankets still available for sale in time for the holiday season. Available in navy and cranberry, the cost of each is $45.00 and can be purchased at the Beachwood Sewerage Authority, located at 1133 Beach Avenue. Make checks payable to Beachwood Recreation.

Today we spotlight the work of Beachwood man Joseph Jerue, who was a builder, World War II veteran (along with both of his sons – one of whom, John, was lost during battle) and mayor of the borough.

In 1937, Mayor Jerue, then 41 years old, was named the builder of a prominent cultural site on Washington Street in downtown Toms River, the Community Theatre. To our benefit, its construction and featured amenities were detailed in an issue of Box Office Magazine in August of that year. Below you’ll find that article in full. We hope you enjoy this look back to an era and its architecture that one particularly prolific Beachwood resident helped make possible.

A MODERN THEATRE IN THE COLONIAL MANNER

Toms River Community Theatre as it appeared after its construction, in 1937. Today it has been renovated into shops and eateries.

A new modern theatre with a seating capacity of 1,000 persons was recently erected on Washington Street in Toms River, New Jersey. Definitely out of the ordinary in design and decor, the new edifice reflects the most contemporary expressions of architectural composition.

It is operated by the American Community Theatres, Inc.

Unlike most modern theatres, with their brilliantly lighted marquees and  electric signs over the entrance, this theatre with its simple Colonial front presents a decidedly novel appearance. Its architectural simplicity is pronounced.

The theatre is set back 30 feet from the sidewalk and the intervening portion of the property in front of the theatre is beautifully landscaped and circumvented by a flagged walk of unique design which serves as a delightful approach to and departure from the theatre.

The Washington Street facade is of red facebrick with white joints, in front of which is a beautifully designed Colonial portico done in wood and painted white.

The ticket booth is situated in the center of the entrance screen of doors. Lattice work above the entrance doors and the circular windows above the lattice work are constructed of wood and glass. All portico in wood and painted white, against the masterly executed red and white masonry background presents a simple but beautiful facade.

In the evening this facade is illuminated by flood lights which increase the beauty and interest of the architectural simplicity to a spectacular degree. The same simplicity of design is followed throughout the interior of the auditorium.

The sidewalls are of acoustical plaster integrally colored to a neutral shade. Subtly concealed vertical lighting troughs along the sidewalks are provided with varied colored lamps, lending a beautiful and variable color scheme to the interior.

The foyer, promenade, ladies’ cosmetic room and the men’s room are also of simple modern design, the beauty of which is greatly enhanced by exquisite lighting fixtures, carpets and furnishings.

The auditorium is provided with exceptionally wide chairs spaced to provide the maximum comfort for the patrons. The floors are carpeted with rich, heavy, exquisite carpet which helps to promote finer acoustical treatment for sound reception.

Particular attention was given to the gradient of the auditorium floor to insure every patron a perfect view of the screen, no matter where he is seated.

A new modern ventilating system was installed to assure the occupants of a healthful and comfortable atmosphere while they are being entertained. The projection room and sound equipment in this theatre are of the finest known to modern science.

The Toms River Community Theatre is a delightful example of the modern functionally furnished theatre. It was designed and erected under the supervision of Thomas W. Lamb, Inc., architects. The builder was Joseph E. Jerue, of Beachwood, N. J.
